Eadweard Muybridge,R Taft: The Human Figure in Motion

The Human Figure in Motion

Description

This is the largest selection ever made from the famous Muybridge sequence high-speed photographs of human motion. Containing 4,789 photographs, it illustrates some 163 different types of action: elderly man lifting log, woman sweeping, woman climbing ladder, men boxing and wrestling, child crawling, man lifting weight, man jumping, and 155 other types of action, some of which are illustrated by as many as 62 different photographs. Taken at speeds ranging up to 1/6000th of a second, these photographs show bone and muscle positions against ruled backgrounds. Almost all subjects are undraped, and all actions are shown from three angles: front, rear, and three-quarter view. These historic photographs, one of the great monuments of nineteenth-century photography, are reproduced original size, with all the clarity and detail of the originals. As a complete thesaurus of human action, it has never been superseded. Muybridge was a genius of photography, who had unlimited financial, technical, and scientific backing at the University of Pennsylvania. This volume presents the final selection from more than 100,000 negatives made at an expenditure of more than $50,000. It has never been superseded as a sourcebook for artists, students, animators, and art directors. "An unparalleled dictionary of action for all artists, photographers." "American Artist. ""Impressive and valuable collection." "Scientific American. ""

These easy-to-make recipes include facial steams, scrubs, masks, and lip balms; massage oils, baths, rubs, and wraps; hand, nail, and foot treatments; and shampoos, dyes, and conditioners. Includes bathing rituals and massage techniques." An icon (from the Greek word eikon, "image") is a wooden panel painting of a holy person or scene from Orthodox Christianity, the religion of the Byzantine Empire that is practiced today mainly in Greece and Russia. It was believed that these works acted as intermediaries between worshipers and the holy personages they depicted. Their pictorial language is stylized and primarily symbolic, rather than literal and narrative. Indeed, every attitude, pose, and colour depicted in an icon has a precise meaning, and their painters - usually monks - followed prescribed models from The Human Figure in Motion free ebook iconographic manuals. The goal of this book is to catalogue the vast heritage of images according to iconographic type and subject, from the most ancient at the Monastery of Saint Catherine in the Sinai to those from Greece, Constantinople, and Russia. Chapters focus on the role of icons in the Orthodox liturgy and on common iconic subjects, including the fathers and saints of the Eastern Church and the life of Jesus and his followers. As with other volumes in the "Guide to Imagery Series", this book includes a wealth of color illustrations in which details are called out for discussion.

The Discomfort Zone: How Leaders Turn Difficult Conversations into Breakthroughs

Description

Leaders, managers, and coaches are charged with getting people to stretch their limits but are often unsuccessful. Top leadership coach Marcia Reynolds says the problem is, incorrectly handled, difficult conversations create more resistance than growth. Reynolds offers a model and methods for discovering what to say so people change their own minds. As a result, leaders equip people to find their own solutions, see situations more strategically, and grow beyond their limitations. Reynolds explains how to pick the right time and place to enter the discomfort zone and how to create a "safety bubble" so that people will trust your intentions. Then, drawing on recent discoveries in the neuroscience of learning, she helps leaders ask the kinds of questions that short-circuit the brain's defense mechanisms and habitual thought patterns. Instead of being told, people see for themselves where they're falling short and how they can do better, resulting in lasting changes. She includes numerous examples and case studies to see the techniques in action. Conversations in the Discomfort Zone will never be easy. But with Reynolds's assistance, a trip there will result in breakthrough solutions, lasting changes, and an engaged workforce.

"Amused? Confused? Frustrated? Surprised? Try these feelings on for size." In this provocative cautionary tale for teens, the sequel to Awaken, seventeen-year-old Maddie's rebellion against the digital - only life grows dangerous. Maddie is in Los Angeles, trying to stay out of trouble. But one night, a seemingly small act The Discomfort Zone: How Leaders Turn Difficult Conversations into Breakthroughs download ebook pdf of defiance lands her in the place she fears the most: a detention centre. Here, patients are reprogrammed to accept a digital existence. Maddie is now fighting for her mind, her soul, and her very life. Once again, Katie Kacvinsky paints a disturbing picture of our increasingly technology-based society. Xenophon (ca. 430 to ca. 354 BCE), a member of a wealthy but politically quietist Athenian family and an admirer of Socrates, left Athens in 401 BCE to serve as a mercenary commander for Cyrus the Younger of Persia, then joined the staff of King Agesilaus II of Sparta before settling in Elis and, in the aftermath of the battle of Leuctra in 371 BCE, retiring to Corinth. His historical and biographical works, Socratic dialogues and reminiscences, and short treatises on hunting, horsemanship, economics, and the Spartan constitution are richly informative about his own life and times.

I Love You

Description

The simplest romantic gestures are the best - scribble 'I Love You' with a red crayon and it can get you into all sorts of trouble! This is the perfect (and quirkiest) way to say those three little words.

Coca-Cola, Disney, Nike and Hewlett Packard all have it: a positive corporate culture that powerfully affects their bottom line. Yet despite its ability to make or break a business, corporate culture remains the most underutilized resource in business today. Internationally renowned academics and consultants Rob Goffee and Gareth Jones draw on fifteen years of research with high-profile companies such as Unilever, Polygram, Heineken and Johnson & Johnson. They successfully define the notoriously amorphous concept of culture and distil it into a diagnostic test that managers can use to assess which of four basic cultural forms prevail within their department, team or organisation. The Character of a Corporation reveals: How the ways in which members of an organisation relate to one another affects the company's overall performance - as well as the individual's quality of life. Why most organisations are characterized by several cultures at once - and how to find the kind of culture that suits I Love You free epub you best. What to do if you want of need to change your organisation from one culture to another. How to position your culture for greater competitive advantage.

"LaChapelle Heaven to Hell" is the long-awaited third volume in an exhilarating trilogy that began with "LaChapelle Land" (1996) and continued with the infamous "Hotel LaChapelle" (1999). Packed with astonishing, color-saturated, and provocative images, those titles both became instant collector's items and have since gone through multiple printings. Featuring almost twice as many images as its The World Almanac and Book of Facts 2015 download ebook pdf predecessors, "LaChapelle Heaven to Hell" is an explosive compilation of new work by the visionary photographer. Since the publication of "Hotel LaChapelle", the strength of LaChapelle's work lies in its ability to focus the lens of celebrity and fashion toward more pressing issues of societal concern. LaChapelle's images - of the most famous faces on the planet, and marginalized figures like transsexual Amanda Lepore or the cast of his critically acclaimed social documentary Rize - call into question our relationship with gender, glamour, and status. Using his trademark baroque excess, LaChapelle inverts the consumption he appears to celebrate, pointing instead to apocalyptic consequences for humanity itself.

Pig's Foot: A Novel

Description

Oscar Mandinga, great-grandchild of the founders of a small hamlet of wooden shacks and red earth deep in the Cuban hinterland, is a sardonic teller of tales - some taller than others - of slavery, revolution, family secrets, love and identity, spanning four generations. One day Oscar Mandinga wakes to find himself utterly alone in the world. As the sole descendant of his family line he is not sure what to do or where he should go, but in the midst of this uncertainty, he holds fast to what his grandfather always told him: 'No man knows who he is until he knows his past, the history of his country.' As Oscar sets out to find his ancestral village of Pata de Puerco and the meaning of the magical pig's-foot amulet he has inherited, the search for his country's hidden history becomes entangled with his search for the truth about himself. Ambitious in scope, yet intimate in tone, rippling with vitality and driven by passion, full of dark comedy, magical history and startling revelations, Pig's Foot is a dazzling evocation of Cuba's tumultuous history. It is a spellbinding accomplishment.

From May to September every year, society's elite migrates to a small strip of land on the South Fork of Long Island, the Hamptons, one of the most exclusive and chic spots in the country. From the glamorous parties and unparalleled beaches to the mega-estates and its storied history, the Hamptons are magnetic. This beautifully illustrated updated edition of In the Spirit of the Hamptons by Kelly Killoren Bensimon, including a new foreword by Pamela Fiori, sends the reader on a personal tour of the many hamlets that make up the Hamptons-each with its own charm-from iconic restaurants such as Southampton's Sant'Ambroeus or the renowned Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill or the ultra high-end shopping scene in East Hampton. The fusion of these two disparate cultures resulted in a singular beauty. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Luang Prabang is considered the best preserved town in Southeast Asia. Visit the historic capital Vientiane and travel to the enigmatic Plain of Jars or journey south on Pig's Foot: A Novel ebook pdf the Mekong to Wat Phu and admire the beauty of its breathtaking riverside location. The temple, uncovered by archaeologists who were part of the French mission civilisatrice and creators of the elegant colonial buildings of Luang Prabang, dates from the 6th century and forms the northernmost point of the Khmer empire. Laos is revealed as a place of artistic diversity and ancient history steeped in myth and legend.

Herodotus: Histories, Books 1-4 (Herodoti Historiae: Libri I-Iv): Libri I-IV

Description

In this new edition of Herodotus' Histories, Nigel Wilson has revised the original Oxford Classical Text by the Danish scholar C. Hude, published in 1906 and last revised in 1927. As well as incorporating much of the valuable work on the text that has been conducted since the original edition, in particular that of J. Enoch Powell and Paul Maas, Wilson has taken into account new readings from over 80 papyri. In addition, clarity in the apparatus criticus has been improved by the collation of two previously neglected medieval manuscripts, which belong to the so-called Roman family. A number of passages remain puzzling, and Wilson proposes new solutions and provides plausible emendations wherever possible. The editor has also written a commentary volume, Herodotea, to accompany this edition, in which he explains many of the editorial decisions he made while revising this key classical text.

For anyone curious about prophecy and the signs of the end times, this book links the pieces of the prophecy puzzle in plain, simple language. There are 1,000 prophecies in the Bible so it s natural to wonder, have any prophecies been fulfilled? Do they really explain the future? Can we really know what will happen at the end of time? In succinct and clear answers to most Cloud Atlas free ebook frequently asked questions, Dr. Jeremiah decodes and clarifies prophecy for the average person. He explains in simple lay terms what could otherwise be mysterious and even frightening, allowing readers to gain a balanced and assuring perspective of the significance of prophetic events to their personal lives as believers in Christ. He also helps readers understand how prophecy is directly related to world events today." For every occasion, mood, and meal, these are recipes that any home cook can make, including:

David Mitchell: Cloud Atlas

Cloud Atlas

Description

By the "New York Times "bestselling author of "The Bone Clocks"- Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize A postmodern visionary and one of the leading voices in twenty-first-century fiction, David Mitchell combines flat-out adventure, a Nabokovian love of puzzles, a keen eye for character, and a taste for mind-bending, philosophical and scientific speculation in the tradition of Umberto Eco, Haruki Murakami, and Philip K. Dick. The result is brilliantly original fiction as profound as it is playful. In this groundbreaking novel, an influential favorite among a new generation of writers, Mitchell explores with daring artistry fundamental questions of reality and identity. "Cloud Atlas" begins in 1850 with Adam Ewing, an American notary voyaging from the Chatham Isles to his home in California. Along the way, Ewing is befriended by a physician, Dr. Goose, who begins to treat him for a rare species of brain parasite. . . . Abruptly, the action jumps to Belgium in 1931, where Robert Frobisher, a disinherited bisexual composer, contrives his way into the household of an infirm maestro who has a beguiling wife and a nubile daughter. . . . From there we jump to the West Coast in the 1970s and a troubled reporter named Luisa Rey, who stumbles upon a web of corporate greed and murder that threatens to claim her life. . . . And onward, with dazzling virtuosity, to an inglorious present-day England; to a Korean superstate of the near future where neocapitalism has run amok; and, finally, to a postapocalyptic Iron Age Hawaii in the last days of history. But the story doesn t end even there. The narrative then boomerangs back through centuries and space, returning by the same route, in reverse, to its starting point. Along the way, Mitchell reveals how his disparate characters connect, how their fates intertwine, and how their souls drift across time like clouds across the sky. As wild as a videogame, as mysterious as a Zen koan, "Cloud Atlas" is an unforgettable tour de force that, like its incomparable author, has transcended its cult classic status to become a worldwide phenomenon. Praise for"Cloud Atlas" [David] Mitchell is, clearly, a genius. He writes as though at the helm of some perpetual dream machine, can evidently do anything, and his ambition is written in magma across this novel s every page. "The New York Times Book Review" One of those how-the-holy-hell-did-he-do-it? modern classics that no doubt is and should be read by any student of contemporary literature. Dave Eggers Wildly entertaining . . . a head rush, both action-packed and chillingly ruminative. "People" The novel as series of nested dolls or Chinese boxes, a puzzle-book, and yet not just dazzling, amusing, or clever but heartbreaking and passionate, too. I ve never read anything quite like it, and I m grateful to have lived, for a while, in all its many worlds. Michael Chabon "Cloud Atlas"ought to make [Mitchell] famous on both sides of the Atlantic as a writer whose fearlessness is matched by his talent. "The Washington Post Book World" Thrilling . . . One of the biggest joys in"Cloud Atlas"is watching Mitchell sashay from genre to genre without a hitch in his dance step. "Boston Sunday Globe" Grand and elaborate . . . [Mitchell] creates a world and language at once foreign and strange, yet strikingly familiar and intimate. "Los Angeles Times""

A Short Course in Intellectual Self-defense: Find Your Inner Chomsky

Description

What is the relationship between democracy and critical thinking? What must a citizen in a democracy know to make the word democracy meaningful? In A Short Course in Intellectual Self-Defense, historian and educator Normand Baillargeon provides readers with the tools to see through the spin and jargon of everyday politics and news reporting in order to decide for themselves what is at stake and how to ask the necessary questions to protect themselves from the manipulations of the government and the media. Whether the issue be the call to what we're told will be a bloodless war, the "debate" around Intelligent Design, or the meaning of a military expenditure, Baillargeon teaches readers to evaluate information and sort fact from official and media spin.

Bob Dylan: Chronicles

Chronicles

Description

The celebrated first memoir from arguably the most influential singer-songwriter in the country, Bob Dylan. ""I'd come from a long ways off and had started a long ways down. But now destiny was about to manifest itself. I felt like it was looking right at me and nobody else."" So writes Bob Dylan in "Chronicles: Volume One, " his remarkable book exploring critical junctures in his life and career. Through Dylan's eyes and open mind, we see Greenwich Village, circa 1961, when he first arrives in Manhattan. Dylan's New York is a magical city of possibilities -- smoky, nightlong parties; literary awakenings; transient loves and unbreakable friendships. Elegiac observations are punctuated by jabs of memories, penetrating and tough. With the book's side trips to New Orleans, Woodstock, Minnesota and points west, "Chronicles: Volume One" is an intimate and intensely personal recollection of extraordinary times. By turns revealing, poetical, passionate and witty, "Chronicles: Volume One" is a mesmerizing window on Bob Dylan's thoughts and influences. Dylan's voice is distinctively American: generous of spirit, engaged, fanciful and rhythmic. Utilizing his unparalleled gifts of storytelling and the exquisite expressiveness that are the hallmarks of his music, Bob Dylan turns "Chronicles: Volume One" into a poignant reflection on life, and the people and places that helped shape the man and the art.
